3 Days 2 night Jawa Timur Religi Tour
Brief information and history: Pura Agung Blambangan was originally the site of “Songo Tiang” (Nine Pillars), a relic of the Blambangan Kingdom. It is located in Tembok Rejo Village, Muncar District, Banyuwangi Regency. The journey to the location takes about one hour from Ketapang Harbor, Banyuwangi.
Pura Agung Blambangan is the largest temple among 92 other temples in Banyuwangi and was officially inaugurated on Saturday, coinciding with the Kuningan holiday, June 28, 1980. The temple complex covers an area of 1,375 m², which is not sufficient to accommodate all Hindu devotees in Banyuwangi during communal prayers.
Its Padmasana shrine is 10.6 meters high and is surrounded by a wall measuring 37.6 meters (west), 36.5 meters (north), 37.6 meters (southeast), and 28 meters (south). The temple has a strong historical connection with the Hindu-style Blambangan Kingdom in Banyuwangi. The Blambangan Kingdom was centered in the Blambangan area, south of Banyuwangi, known today as Alas Purwo. The last ruler to occupy the throne was King Prabu Minakjinggo. This kingdom existed at the end of the Majapahit era and is considered the last Hindu kingdom on the island of Java.
Pura Luhur Giri Selaka Alas Purwo
When the Majapahit Kingdom collapsed in the 14th century, the royal leaders declared:
“Our kingdom may be destroyed, but wait five hundred years—our descendants will rise and reclaim the former territory of Majapahit.”
This belief is held by most Hindus in Banyuwangi, creating pride in their return to Hinduism. The name “Alas Purwo” instantly brings to mind a dense forest area—and indeed it is. Alas Purwo is a National Park forest area under the Ministry of Forestry and Plantations.
Pura Alas Purwo is maintained by the Hindu community of Tegaldlimo District, Banyuwangi. To reach the temple, devotees must enter the Alas Purwo National Park. From the park’s main gate, it takes about 40 minutes to arrive at Pura Giri Selaka.
Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung
Brief history: Establishing Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung in Senduro Village, Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, was not an easy task. Situated on the eastern slopes of Mount Semeru, Hindu followers waited nearly 20 years to realize their dream of building a sacred temple.
The desire to build a temple emerged in 1969, fueled by a connection between Hindu leaders in Lumajang and Bali. This was especially significant after the nuur tirta (holy water-fetching) ceremony from Bali to Watu Kelosot Springs at the foot of Mount Semeru, in connection with the grand Ekadasa Rudra ceremony at Pura Agung Besakih, Mount Agung, Bali, in March 1963.
The nuur tirta tradition was repeated in 1979 for another Ekadasa Rudra ceremony, which concluded with a majauman ritual at Watu Kelosot Springs. Despite funding challenges and difficulties obtaining construction permits, the temple finally stood as a symbol of perseverance and devotion.
Pura Luhur Poten, Mount Bromo
Pura Poten, also known as Pura Luhur Poten Mount Bromo, stands in the middle of the Bromo volcanic sand plain. It is a place of worship for the Tenggerese people to honor Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God) as the manifestation of Dewa Brahma.
Built in 2000, its architecture blends Balinese and Javanese styles, divided into three zones (Mandala):
Utama Mandala – the main prayer area containing a Padmasana shrine.
Madya Mandala – the middle area for preparations and rituals.
Nista Mandala – the outer courtyard with a single entrance, serving as a transition from the outside to the sacred temple area.
Aside from daily worship, Pura Luhur Poten is the venue for the Tenggerese cultural celebration Yadnya Kasada, commonly called the Kasada Ceremony. This annual ritual expresses gratitude for divine blessings and is held on the full moon night of the month of Kasada.
